Athletics

The Wyomissing Area Jr.-Sr. High School provides educational experiences of several types.  The athletic program is an important component of these experiences.  Participation in athletics is designed to meet the leisure, recreational, social, and emotional interests and needs of all students.

Major goals of the athletic program include the development of leadership skills, social attitudes, and cooperative attitudes. Athletics provide ample opportunity for the development of understanding and cooperation within the student body.  Our athletic program also provides extensive opportunities for students to develop essential lifetime skills.  Furthermore, the athletic program helps generate school and community pride while giving the athletes the chance to display their own individual and collective talents and be judged on the basis of achievements, without regard to social, ethnic, or economic background.

In order to receive the educational benefits and experience the excitement that comes with athletic participation, athletes must be willing to assume certain responsibilities:

1.   Show respect for authority and property

2.   Maintain academic eligibility and training rule standards

3.   Display an appreciation for the ideals of sportsmanship and fair play

4.   Desire to develop your athletic skills to the highest possible level

5.   Understand that striving to succeed is just as important in life as it is in athletics

By assuming the above responsibilities, athletes will serve as positive role models for the rest of the student body.  In addition, students should note that participation in athletics is not a guaranteed right, but a privilege that is earned in part through good citizenship and good academics.

The successes of Spartan athletes are on display both in our trophy cases and on the walls outside the gymnasium.  Approximately sixty percent of students in grades 7 thru 12 participate in at least one sport each year.

WINNING---KEEPING IT ALL IN PERSPECTIVE

The Wyomissing Area School District endorses the belief, “athletes first-winning second.”  Athletic programs that have these priorities reversed are more likely to break rules, cut corners, or treat athletes in an unacceptable manner.  This does not mean that winning is unimportant.  Indeed, the immediate goal of any athletic contest is to win, but striving to win the right way is more important than actually winning.  We ask that our parents and athletes support this attitude as well.
