Chapter 15 - Protected Handicapped Students

In accordance with Chapter 15 of the PA School Code, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and the American with Disabilities Act, Wyomissing Area School District will provide for each protected handicapped student, without discrimination or cost to the student or family, those related aids, services, and accommodations which are needed to provide equal opportunity to participate in and obtain the benefits from the school program and extracurricular activities to the maximum extent appropriate to the student’s abilities.

A “protected handicapped student” is a child who is of school age with a physical or mental disability that substantially limits or prohibits participation in or access to an aspect of the school program. These services are distinct from those services provided to students determined to be eligible, or thought to be eligible, for special education programs.

Information about how to access these services can be obtained from the building principal or school counselor at your child’s school. Parents who wish to have their child evaluated for such services should put their request in writing and provide relevant medical records to the school counselor.
