HEALTH AND MEDICAL SERVICES

  • Vision screening is to be done every school year until the child completes 5th grade and at least every two years thereafter until the child graduates from 12th grade. Growth screening is conducted annually in all grades. Parents will be notified if the child appears to have a possible visual problem.

    Parents will also have access to their child's growth/BMI information.

    Hearing acuity is tested in grades K, 1, 2, 3, 7, 11, and upon referral by teachers, parents, and physicians. Parents will be notified of any difficulty the child exhibits.

    Scoliosis screening is conducted in grades six and seven.
     

  • Immunization regulations are determined by the state of Pennsylvania. Current regulations require the following for all students:

     

    Children in ALL grades (K-12) need the following immunizations for attendance:

    • 4 doses of tetanus, diphtheria and acellular pertussis* (1 dose on or after 4th birthday)
    • 4 doses of polio (4th dose on or after 4th birthday and at least 6 months after previous dose given)
    • 2 doses of measles, mumps and rubella**
    • 3 doses of hepatitis B
    • 2 doses of varicella (chickenpox), or evidence of immunity

     

    7th through 12th Grade ADDITIONAL immunization requirements for attendance:
     

    • 2 doses meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MCV)
    • First dose is given 11-15 years of age; a second dose is required at age 16 or entry into 12th grade.  If the dose was given at 16 years of age or older, only one dose is required
    • 1 dose of tetanus, diphtheria, acellular pertussis (Tdap)

    *Usually given as DTaP or DTP or DT or Td

    ** Usually given as MMR

    Exemptions to the school laws for immunizations are:

    • medical reasons;
    • and religious beliefs.

     

    If your child is exempt from immunizations, they may be removed from school during an outbreak.

     

  • All medications, both prescription and over-the-counter, sent from home must be accompanied by a completed Medication Administration Consent and Licensed Prescriber's Medication Order Form or other written communication from the licensed prescriber providing directions regarding the administration/self-administration of medication. This form can be found on the school's website or obtained from your child's school nurse. All medication shall be brought to the nurse's office by the parent/guardian or by another adult designated by the parent/guardian.

    Medications shall be delivered in its original packaging and labeled with the student's name. In addition, packaging for prescription medications must include the medication dose, time and route of administration, any special dispensing instructions, the name and registration number of the licensed prescriber, the prescription serial number, as well as the name, address and telephone number of the pharmacy.

    Students may carry asthma inhalers and EpiPens if the proper guidelines are followed according to the school's policy and the proper paperwork is on file in the nurse's office.

    Student Illness

    Parents are asked to keep a child home if they exhibit a fever greater than 100.4 or are actively vomiting.
