OCTOBER 2025 Newsletter

West Reading Elementary Principal

FROM THE PRINCIPAL - DR. BABB

Hello WREC Parents,
We are off to a fantastic start to the 2025–26 school year! September was filled with energy, and we’re excited to keep building on this strong momentum.

This year, we welcomed our largest-ever 6th grade class (166 students) and our smallest-ever 5th grade class (121 students). Together, they have gotten WREC off to a great start. I’ve been especially impressed by their work ethic, consistent attendance, and the way they’ve embraced our four WREC Rules:

1.    Follow directions from all staff
2.    Put forth your best effort
3.    Come to class prepared
4.    Communicate respectfully

Our staff has been actively reinforcing these expectations, and the positive results are already showing. Thank you, parents, for supporting these same values at home—it makes a huge difference in setting students up for success.

Another highlight of this fall has been the completion of our playground renovation. If you haven’t yet seen the progress photos on the district website—or better yet, visited in person—you’re in for a wonderful surprise!

The playground now features:
·      Brand new equipment and climbing wall with a safe padded surface
·      Fresh asphalt with lined playing areas
·      A pickleball court
·      Two basketball courts with backboards and keys
·      Pavilion repairs and a new storage structure
·      Upgraded seating perfect for outdoor learning
·      Planting containers and walls we’ll begin using this fall

This new space has already brought fresh excitement and opportunities for both play and learning at WREC.

We are looking forward to a year full of growth, connection, and achievement. Thank you for being such an important part of our school community.

Warm regards,
Dr. Babb

Introducing ParentSquare - New Communication Platform

Wyomissing Area is Moving to ParentSquare! After over several years with both SchoolMessenger and ClassDojo, Wyomissing Area has found a new unified home for our mass communications! ParentSquare is a tool that helps school districts easily communicate with parents, staff, and the community.

ParentSquare offers a host of tools that allows users to more effectively communicate and engage with families and students. Some features include: Mass notifications, Urgent Alerts, Mobile apps for all users (iOS and Android), Remind App Direct Messaging with two-way translation, Calendar events, and so much more!

Mid-August, staff and parents will be invited to activate their ParentSquare accounts. Those who do not activate in August will still receive text, email, and phone notifications based on information provided in the PowerSchool Parent Portal, so there should be no lapse in receiving information from the district over the summer as we transition from SchoolMessenger and ClassDojo to ParentSquare.

  • Sore throat with fever and/or stomachache and/or white spots on the back of the throat

  • Injuries that happen at home or over the weekend should be taken care of prior to returning to school. Please notify the nurse with any instructions or restrictions related to such injuries.

Kramer

FROM THE SCHOOL COUNSELOR - Ms. Melissa Kramer

Red Ribbon Week:
The last week of October WREC will be celebrating Red Ribbon Week, which is a national campaign about making healthy choices and choosing to say “no” to drugs and alcohol. During guidance class students are learning about dealing with peer-pressure, how to be an assertive speaker, and how alcohol affects the developing brain.

WREC will be celebrating RRW from October 27 - 31. This year's theme is:
Life is a Puzzle, Solve it Drug Free!

There will be theme dress-up days, activities, give-aways, and educational opportunities throughout this week.

Looking for additional resources or information on this topic? Check out the website for the Council on Chemical Abuse.

FROM THE MAIN OFFICE

  • Lost & Found

The lost & Found rack is located outside the main office / Guidance hallway. By mid fall it is usually overflowing with lost items. If your child has lost something please encourage them to stop by the rack. All unclaimed items will be donated to a charity prior to winter break, spring break and end of the school year.

  • Late Bus

The Late Bus began on September 15th. Students who are in Band, Orchestra, Clubs and WREC Academy will be able to take the late bus when staying after school to attend these activities.

The late bus has 8 bus stops and picks up at WREC at 3:35 pm. Please click here to view the Late Bus Map.

  • Visitors & Item(s) Drop Off

In order to avoid calling into the classrooms which disrupts learning we respectfully ask that parents avoid unnecessary visits to the office by double checking that their students have the following each morning before leaving home:
  1. charged ipad
  2. lunch/backpack
  3. water bottle
  4. signed forms
  5. props for assignments

Sitar

WREC Students get to experience an Indian Sitar!

David Mell came to demonstrate how to play the Indian Sitar in sixth grade world music. He has done demonstrations at the Reading Museum. This was a unique opportunity for this class, and we are so fortunate to have had this opportunity. He is pictured here with his granddaughter, Audrey.
Mrs. Boyer

Title goes here

WREC students and staff enjoyed celebrating Mrs. Boyer's milestone birthday! Mrs. Boyer had an "all day celebration" as staff members took turns delivering a balloon to her classroom through out the school day. Of course she was dressed up in her favorite color PURPLE! Happy Birthday Mrs. Boyer!
