English Language Development

The goal of the Wyomissing Area School District’s English Language Development (ELD) program is to facilitate the acquisition of English language skills of students whose native or first language is not English.  Planned instruction in ELD focuses on developing the English learner’s listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in English.  All instruction is standards-based according to Pennsylvania Core Standards for Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking and the English Language Proficiency Standards of Pennsylvania for Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking.

FAQs

  • ELD stands for the English Language Development Program. In the Wyomissing Area School District, the ELD program is designed to provide targeted English language instruction to students whose first language is not English. The goal is to support these learners in developing the language skills necessary to thrive academically and participate confidently in the classroom and school community.

  • ELD classes offer a supportive, language-rich environment where English is made accessible and engaging for students through the use of movement, music, visuals, storytelling, and interactive games. Instruction may take place in small groups within the ELD classroom, or the ELD teacher may collaborate with students in their regular classrooms to reinforce language development in real-time academic settings.

    • Consults with classroom teachers to assess the academic and language needs of ELD students.
    • Provides resources and instructional strategies to support the modification of curriculum, ensuring greater accessibility for English Language Learners.
    • Participates in parent-teacher conferences when appropriate and as scheduling allows, to support communication and student progress.

  • Student progress is monitored based on the Stages of Language Acquisition. Classroom teachers assess growth by evaluating the student’s ability to succeed within the general education setting, while taking into account their level of English language proficiency.

    • The WIDA ACCESS for ELLs is a state-mandated assessment administered annually to all students identified as English Learners (ELLs). This assessment measures English language proficiency in the areas of listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
    • The results provide valuable insight into a student’s ability to access and engage with the classroom instruction in English. Teachers use these scores to inform instructional decisions and tailor support to meet each student’s language development needs.
    • In addition to guiding classroom instruction, the test results help track student progress in academic English and assist schools in determining the appropriate level of English language support services.
